Doing this “Wrong Thing” Will Get You More Customers from Google
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) isn’t fun, but it is very important. It can also be incredibly difficult to do properly… but I’m here to make it that much easier for you. Let’s focus on one very simple aspect of SEO that 99% of people get wrong and that is “Keywords”.
Keywords are the term for the words people type into search engines to look for whatever they need. Most marketing “experts” will tell you to keep your Keywords simple as this will get you the biggest volume of visitors because of the broadness of the search.
A simple example would be typing in “Asteroids” into Google. This is a very general search that gives 230,000,000 results and a perfect example of what’s called a Short Tail Keyword i.e. usually 1 or 2 words and covers a broad topic.
Now, some will think it’s great to be included so easily in search engines and feel optimistic about the results this will bring. Unfortunately… These results tend to be minimal because you’re now competing against 229,999,999 other web pages or links. So the chances of your product or service being the one that’s picked is… well… simply put… not good.
The next type of Keyword is called Medium Tail Keywords and these provide a little more specificity, so the search could now be “Asteroids and Dinosaurs”. This search into Google generates 651,000 results. That’s just over a 99.7% decrease in results which is an absolutely HUGE REDUCTION IN COMPETITION!
Just imagine how powerful that is to you and your business. You’re no longer competing with EVERYONE. You’re now getting closer to being the FIRST and BEST choice.
But wait!
It gets even better!
The FINAL type of Keywords are called (as you’ve probably guessed), Long Tail Keywords. And these (as you’ve probably guessed again!) contain more than 3 words and reduce the results even further.
So now if we search into Google, “How many asteroids were there that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs?”, we now get only 189,000 generated results.
That’s a reduction of around 70.97% from using Medium Tail Keywords and 99.92% from Short Tail Keywords.
That. Is. STAGGERING!
And also incredibly POWERFUL.
The question I hope you’re asking yourself reading this right now is, “how can I apply this to my business?”
Well here’s the answer:
Go to your website provider and log in to make some changes.
Go to the SEO section in your settings.
Look for the option to choose your SEO Keywords.
Now PAUSE!
Think about what you offer in your business that people will search into Google but will be in Long Tail form.
So if you’re a Hairdresser in Telford for example, and one of your specialisms are Hair Extensions, instead of having the Keyword as “Hair Extensions Telford”, you could change this to “Keratin Bond Extensions in Telford”. This change would reduce the search results from 164,000 for the Short Tail Keywords, to 80,200 for the Long Tail Keywords. Just over 50% difference in that simple change in specificity which could be a DRAMATIC impact in the amount of customers who find you for your services and you have now gained from your competitors.
Sometimes, simple changes like this and out-of-the-box thinking are what truly make businesses excel.
