Here it is: What is the worst number in business?
Most might think 0.
0 customers. 0 leads. 0 bookings.
All very big and bad problems… but there’s a number far worse than this that actually brings more businesses to their knees far more frequently than 0 ever could.
That number my friends… is 1.
“1 is the loneliest number that you’ll ever do.”
Sometimes the classics are classics for a reason, and the reason is: it’s true.
Let’s do a quick 10 second exercise, think about your business right now and I want you to picture the area or system that’s absolutely critical for your business to run, that you have ONLY 1 METHOD in place.
This could be 1 member of staff solely responsible for your marketing, it could be only 1 contact method, it could be 1 source of lead generation,.
Now you’ve visualized the life-support system of your business, imagine what would happen…
If it just stopped working.
Imagine the sheer devastation that would inflict!
The stress. The time. The money. The sleepless nights. The loss of income.
The worst of it all?
It is completely self-inflicted.
So many businesses make this mistake over and over again. We have all been guilty of it.
So many Beauty businesses rely solely on Facebook or Instagram for their work. All it takes is a computer error to lock you out of your account and you’re screwed.
So many Service Based businesses only use their websites for their work. All it takes is a server crash for the website to stop running and you’re screwed.
We’re all guilty of this simple mistake. Hell, even I’ve been guilty of it!
I ran a Trade Business for several years and initially I relied solely on one lead generation method to find clients and there were always new jobs coming in every hour of every day without fail. It was perfect.
Absolutely perfect… Until Winter came.
Then all those jobs that came in every hour of every day without fail, became non-existent.
I was lucky if 1 new job was posted within 3 days. My business went from being fully booked 6 weeks ahead, to nothing booked at all in.
It was absolute torture.
I had panic attacks. I couldn’t sleep. I couldn’t eat. I had lost my entire source of income, but the bills still came due.
I knew I could have prevented this from happening. I knew what I should have done, that I needed to do, but had kicked down the road while times were good.
Sheer, inexcusable stupidity on my part to put the survivability of my business that I had worked tirelessly to build from scratch, in the hands of something I had no control over and could easily have avoided.
Why did I not put in place other sources of lead generation?
Why did I not reinforce the foundation of my business?
Why did I not invest just a little bit of time to do what I knew should be done?
Simple: something else took priority.
A lazy excuse that nearly destroyed my business and could have crippled me financially for years.
I learnt my lesson though. LORD, did I learn my lesson!
Never trust the life of your business to ONLY 1 SYSTEM. It can be fatal.
Through sheer determination and some (humbly bragging) ingenious creative marketing, I managed to weather the storm and come out the other side unscathed.
So many businesses aren’t as capable.
Covid is a perfect example of a situation pulling the plug on all of our businesses. We all had to get incredibly creative, incredibly fast to STAY ALIVE.
The amount of Pubs I saw suddenly offering their menus as takeout options, the amount of Events Businesses that suddenly shifted to virtual formats, the Trades Businesses shifting their quoting strategies from in person to telephone-consultations.
It was so inspiring and ingenious to witness and these new ways of doing business are STILL being used now.
But if these systems had been implemented before Covid ever occurred, that would mean the months of struggle and insane financial loss could have ALL BEEN AVOIDED.
If the 1 PRIMARY SYSTEM that your business depends on had been supported with supporting systems and methods, then when faced with a never-before-seen crisis, so many businesses wouldn’t have crumbled and those that survived wouldn’t have lost so much time or revenue to adapt.
